Great, you have decided that a cat is the right choice of pet for you and you have chosen wisely. Cats are a great pet to have as they generally take care of themselves and you don’t need to fuss over them too much like you would with a dog. They don’t expect you to take them for walks and they don’t want you to have to bathe them regularly. In fact, a lot of cats don’t like getting wet at all, so that’s going to save you a lot of time and heartache. However, choosing the right cat for your pet is very important and here are some of the things that you need to consider when getting your first cat.

  1. Long fur or Short fur? – The longer the fur, the more time and attention you will need to dedicate to your cat and its coat. If you are the type of person who has time on their hands, then the long haired cat is the one to choose. If you are a busy person, then maybe the short haired one is the right way to go. Either way, some cats don’t like to be groomed and so you may have to take them to a cat groomer and this can be a little expensive. Other cats love getting brushed and so you may be spending a lot of free time doing just that – brushing them.
  2. Purebred or Mixed Breed? – Like dogs, some breeds of cats get sicker than others and so may need more attention. This additional attention might mean higher vet fees and more stress as you worry about your feline friend. Mixed breed cats on the other hand, tend to be happier and have less issues regarding their health. Whether is it an America Bobtail or a Persian cat, pet insurance is required no matter what type you choose.
  3. Is There Room for Another Pet? – Before bringing home a pet cat, you need to consider how your other animals will feel about this. Having fish or birds and then bringing a cat into your home is just asking for trouble. If you have a dog, it could be hit or miss. Some dogs get along with cats once they see that you like the cat and they are prepared to put up with it. Other dogs are not accepting of cats at all and will try to catch the cat whenever the opportunity presents itself.
  1. It’s a lot of Responsibility – Bringing any animal back to your home is a great deal of responsibility to take on. This isn’t something that you can take home and then forget about it. Cats need a lot of attention and if they don’t get it, they can act up. Acting up can involve scratching furniture which can end up costing you a lot of money to fix. You also have to make sure that they get their shots and are properly taken care of.

Getting yourself a cat is a great decision, but also take into consideration the amount of care and attention your cat is going to need and want.
